At lunchtime, Buddy walked to the cafeteria with Joey. Buddy had forgotten how noisy the lunchroom was. It was hard to concentrate on getting his plate. Joey always got his food quickly. But Buddy couldn’t decide what to get.

“Save me a place,” he told Joey.

What was the lunch anyway? There was something smothered in ketchup, lots of it. Buddy couldn’t read the card that said what it was. It was all smeary. With ketchup! There were also little cups of mayonnaise on a tray. Buddy wasn’t sure what those were for, but he took one. He could always swirl some mayo into the ketchup to make a fun design.

By the time Buddy finished getting his lunch, there were no seats near Joey. Malik and Omar were crammed in next to him. And Kaveh was smashed beside them. There was no room left to even squeeze in.

“Sorry,” said Joey. “You took really long.”

Right, thought Buddy. Poky Buddy. Daydreamy Buddy. Now what would he do?

Buddy looked around. The only empty seat he saw was next to Bea. She was sitting with Amber and Priya. Should he sit with them? He didn’t really have a choice. The girls were talking. Maybe Bea would keep talking to them, not him.

As Buddy sat down, some big kids walked by. Really big. To Buddy, they seemed as tall as trees. Fifth graders, he figured. Had to be. Cool fifth graders.

Buddy twisted around so he could see them better. He leaned so far that he fell off the bench. The fifth graders laughed.

“Gravity,” said one.

“Yeah,” said another. “Bigger objects pull on little ones.”

One of the big kids bent down and ruffled Buddy’s hair. He helped Buddy back up onto the bench. Then he was gone.
